Match Report: Aces 1-4 NIHL Blaze

16 September 2024 at 18:00:00

We open the league season with a win away from home against the Aces.

We got back to league action over the weekend following a three game pre-season. We headed north to Altrincham to take on the Aces. The Aces fell to the Tigers the night before in a 6-3 loss after being up 3-1 through the first period. They look to get something out of the weekend at home.

The first period saw a lot of back and forth with no team really getting a strong handle on the game and it looked like once chance could really turn the tide for one team. The Aces had a couple chances mid way through the period but thanks to Laverick, we were able to stay level. A number of top notch saves in a short period of time kept the game deadlocked.

With just under four minutes to go in the period, we took one of our chances to take the lead. A nice play on the wall between Parham and Gavigan eventually sent Oliver Harris in on a break away, which saw him slot it in the five-hole to break the ice. The rest of the period would be goal less and despite a number of chances both ways, it was only a one goal game.

The second period was much different with the team spending close to half of the period short handed. There were only fifteen shots in this period in total compared to the first where there were twenty-seven. And only one of those fifteen found the back of the net and it gave us some breathing room.

A nice forcheck followed by some great pressure in the offesive zone led to a turn over, pounced on by Ashton Rudkin in the slot. A one-timer, bardown, and our lead would double just shy of the halfway point of the game.

We would do well to kill a number of penalties late on in the period to stay two up and have an advantage headed to the final frame.

The third period was controlled and professionally done by the team. Outshooting the Aces in this period, unlike the first two. We would also score first in this period to make the lead three.

Just fifty-five seconds into the final frame, Kyle Nash would once again get on the scoresheet from a great feed from Oliver Harris. 3-0 with a long way to go.

The Aces would cut the deficit back to two with a great finish from the slot. Malachi Budd with the finish off a feed from Kane Morin and the score would be 1-3 with fifteen to go.

The final goal and the insurance marker came on the powerplay at 46:54. Connor Mellett would pick right up from where he left off in pre-season, with the assists going to Prosser and E Wheeldon.

No more goals would be scored by either side and the first game of the season gave us our first three points of the season.
