Team GB Women, led by captain Jodie Alderson-Smith, were in a winner takes all battle yesterday for a chance to advance to Final Olympic Qualifying against the Netherlands.
GB, in their two previous games had won by a scoreline of 3-2 versus Latvia and a 3-0 scoreline over Spain. Jodie had also scored in both of those games including the empty net insurance goal against Spain.
GB were taken all the way to sixty minutes in a goalless draw which would be followed up by overtime, next goal wins. The Netherlands would find the winner in overtime and would confirm it be them that would advance to the next round.
Team, you came so close and pushed all the way to the end. Be proud of what you achieved, how you played and how you carried yourself through the tournament. This will only be a minor setback and I’m sure you’ll be back, with the next tournament you play in, bigger and stronger. And a huge well done to Jodie Alderson-Smith and Anthony Pountney who both represented us so well at the highest level, we are so proud of you.
Until next time.
